Obituary of Joseph Frank Sobczyk Sr.
Joseph Frank Sobczyk, Sr., 100, of Hopelawn, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Roosevelt Care Center in Edison. Mr. Sobczyk was born in Perth Amboy to the late Andrew and Stephania (Kukulka) Sobczyk and had lived all of his life in Hopelawn.
Mr. Sobczyk was a carpenter and millwright by trade. In 1946 he joined the United Brotherhood Of Carpenters & Joiners Local 65 of Perth Amboy. He was an active member of the organization serving on various committees regarding union affairs and served as Treasurer of the union for seventeen years. He was employed in the field for thirty-three years before his retirement in 1979 as a member of the Carpenters Local 1006 of Milltown. He was a Seventy Year Member of the Carpenters Union Local 254 of Central Jersey. In 1956, Joseph organized the Carpenters Bowling League.
He was a parishioner of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption in Perth Amboy. He was also a member and past president of the Hopelawn Senior Citizens Club and a member and trustee of the Ukrainian Senior Citizens Club.
Mr. Sobczyk hobbies included dancing and bowling. He was the president of the Scibek Brothers Orchestra Fan Club and also served as president of the Garden State Mixed bowling League for forty years. He greatly enjoyed travelling and the weekly bus trips to Atlantic City.
Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife Anna in 2015 and also by his four sisters Genevieve "Jenny" Sobczyk, Mariann Valentine, Helen Borz and Josephine "Jay" Yushkevich and by his brother Walter Sobczyk.
Surviving are one son: Joseph Frank Sobczyk Jr. and wife Diane of Monmouth Junction, his two daughters: Jane Daly of Monroe and Timothy K. of Woodbridge, Joan Coons and husband Walter of Bradenton, FL, his sister Irene Szelc of Hopelawn, three grandchildren, William, Janise and Timothy G., great grandson Kyle and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday 9:15 am at the Mitruska Funeral Home, Inc., 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords. Followed by a 10:00 am service at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption in Perth Amboy. Interment will follow in the Assumption Cemetery in Hopelawn. Visitation hours will be held Thursday from 4 - 8 pm. Parastas services will be held Thursday evening at 7 pm.
