Obituary of Richard J. Simonson
Richard J. Simonson, 89, of Hopelawn, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023 at his home. Mr. Simonson was born in Perth Amboy to the late William and Marion Simonson and had previously lived in Woodbridge before he moving to Hopelawn eleven years ago.
Mr. Simonson was a US Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He was a bartender at Red's Bar Perth Amboy. He was Life member of the Avenel VFW Post 7164. Richard was predeceased by a brother Robert.
He is survived by his Life partner and love Joyce Halifko, his children Richard (Nancy), Steven, Lynn. Joyce's daughters Jodi, Viki, and Heidi (Pete). He was Pop to Justine (Eugene), Jaclyn, Shannon, Samantha (Cali), Zaccaria, Emily, Jeremy, Tyler, Lisette, Mindy, Dolores, Justin and Crystal. He is also survived by many great grandchildren including Karina, Victoriano. Shayla, Jonathan, Bryella and Baby F on the way, his two brothers, William Simonson and Gerald Simonson. Richard was a family man who loved his whole family with his whole heart. He was a solid pillar of the family, always present, caring, loving, with a quiet quip that could have you in stitches. His stories were infamous and numerous and kept everyone on their toes for a laugh. Richard was a proud Marine who was never without his Marines built strength, patience and hat. He was known in the family for his sweet tooth and love of coffee. His big heart extended to all animals, including his three cats Trixie, Whitey and Tattoo. He may not have gotten "Rich" with his scratch offs and lottery tickets, but our lives were richer to have him. He always left a lasting impression on all who met him and he will live forever in our hearts.
Funeral services will be held 10/17/23 Tuesday 10:00 am at the Mitruska Funeral Home, Inc., 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords. Interment will follow in the Alpine Cemetery in Perth Amboy. Visitation hours will be held Monday from 5 to 9 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the WoodbridgeAnimalGroup.com/donate.
