We are so sorry for you loss, I will always picture Irene smiling and happy. She was such a loving grandmother to Eleanor, mother to Gary and mother-in-law to Lynn. We are lucky to have known her.

If we consider the dynamic Walter Szelc to be the Wizard of Oz, then Irene was behind the curtain, quietly pulling the levers! Irene truly lived by the golden rule. She carried herself with quiet dignity. And every so often she would come up with something that would make us smile. She gave being POLISH a lot of polish. I recall walking in on a METS telecast, a fantastic catch being made in the field. Irene looked at me and simply said one word, "Swoboda!" And she followed that up with, "he's Polish." Would I have remembered Ron Swoboda to this day without Irene's reinforcing his Polish ancestry? Certainly not.
In recent times, I would run into Irene and Walter at the Colonial Diner in FORDS. They would "split a breakfast." More than once, Walter would repeat himself...he had some favorite topics for sure. I would look over at Irene and without saying a word, she would covertly roll her eyes and smile. You had to love her!
Irene was a loving wife and wonderful mother. The Szelcs brought up their son to always do what was right. The kind of man that Gary has become reflects well on his upbringing. Walter charted the course, and Irene provided the light of love to guide his path. She certainly was one-of-a-kind, and will be missed by those whose lives she touched.
